BBS Shave

BBS Shave
What is a BBS shave? How it differs from a normal shave?

So, what is the difference between a regular shave and BBS shave? Shouldn't every shave be a super close bbs?

Actually, no.

Dear friends, a standard normal shave is not super close. Yes, the skin is clean, smooth but the tips of the hairs may still be apparent at close range, and when you check with your hand, you may feel the whisker tips ever so slightly. Nevertheless, when you look in a mirror it looks very clean.

A bbs shave on the other hand is a very close and smooth shave, in the simplest terms you leave absolutely no beard. The skin feels smooth like marble and the whisker tips are either invisible or very little visible. Your face actually gets brighter. If you get compliments like “you look like a baby” or “you look younger”, it means you've had a successful BBS shave. It’s the most advanced shaving style.

How to get a bbs shave

Although it may be difficult for beginners, it is actually not much of a different process than a normal shave. You just need to add extra passes to get a closer result and be a bit more attentive. Bbs shaving is a slower process. As you’ll need to use more passes, more attention to the face preparation and shaving technique is a must. Both a good soft shaving brush for cleaning and softening the whiskers and a rich after-shave product to soothe the skin are essential.

It is also important to use a sharper blade and at least a medium-aggressive razor. It can be a bit difficult to get a bbs shave with very mild razors, but you don't need a very aggressive razor also. The sharpness level of the razor blade is more important in this aspect. In addition, it’s much easier to get bbs shaves from shavettes and straight razors since the cutting edge is directly in contact with the skin without a safety bar. But of course, they need more dexterity.

If you normally shave in two passes, for a bbs shave you would need to use 3 or if necessary 4 passes. On each pass you shave your face in different directions, thus cutting all the whiskers growing in different directions. Shaving the cheek area against the grain in the last pass is also a very common practice for getting a bbs shave. In the following video we tried to show you the bbs shave process from start to finish. Having applied the information above, you will easily reach very successful BBS shaves by the time as your hand dexterity improves.

You can watch how to get a bbs shave with all the details from beginning to end in the following video.

Is BBS shave a must? How often you should shave this close?

Folks, first you need to understand this; shaving super close is not a necessity. The thought that “a good shave should be super close” is a misconception. We said above that the BBS Shaving is the “most advanced” shaving style, we did not say it is the “best” shaving style. You can get a very nice, close regular shave with 1-2 passes and be perfectly happy all day long. After all, with a bbs shave you give up some comfort to improve the shave closeness.

Shaving is a very subjective matter. There are many variables depending on the skin and beard type of the person. Not everyone's skin can tolerate super close shaves regularly because your skin may become tired after a certain time since you’ll need to use 3-4 passes every time.

In fact, many experienced wet shavers prefer daily comfortable regular shaves more to bbs shaves. They only shave bbs at special occasions so that their skins always remain in best condition. Indeed, it is best to leave the bbs shaves for special occasions, so that the bbs shave will remain as “special”. It may be a birthday, a business meeting, a cozy Sunday morning or a wedding anniversary.

Before we finish our article, let us give you a recommendation: Do not see the super close shaves as a goal to reach and be happy with slight hair tips on your face. Always remember that, you already reach very close shaves with traditional shaving method. If you push it too hard, you may have problems with ingrowns. Just enjoy the shave and the rest will come in time.

May your shaving pleasure ever last!
