Care and Maintenance of Adjustable Safety Razors
Before starting, we recommend reading our previous blog post about cleaning and disinfecting of shaving equipment. For this article, we chose three common models; Parker Variant Adjustable, Merkur Futur and Merkur Progress.

Although some may think that these razors don’t need any kind of special maintenance, actually there is a need. In fact manufacturers even have instructions for this. Over time, the lime in the water leaves deposits on the coatings, while the fatty ingredients in shaving soaps accumulate as sediment. You can easily dismantle, clean and maintain these machines, let's start with Futur.

MERKUR FUTUR

1. Remove top cap.

2. Press down the blade base and turn the handle counter clockwise while still pressing the blade table down

3. Take out the base with the spring.  Pay attention to the direction of the spring, do not change it.

4. Clean and disinfect all the parts with SterimedEndo Ready disinfectant. Leave the parts in the solution for about 20 minutes to remove all soap, oil and lime residues.

5. Then take all parts and rinse with clean water and dry with a soft microfiber towel. Lightly oil the threads with thin machine oil or gun oil. Do not use any kinds of vegetable organic oils as they are acidic in structure.

6. Insert the spring in the same direction in the bottom part of the base.

7. Turn the handle clock wise while still pressing the blade base down to assembly the razor.

8. Clip the top back on and your razors is ready to use.

MERKUR PROGRESS

Now let's look at Merkur Progress.

1. First remove the top head plate by turning the adjustment knob counter clockwise.

2. Remove the lower adjusting part by pulling the button down. Do not attempt to remove the blade base. This part is permanently fixed at the factory.

3. Clean and disinfect all the parts with SterimedEndo Ready disinfectant. Leave the parts in the solution for about 20 minutes to remove all soap, oil and lime residues. Then take all parts out and rinse with clean water and dry with a soft microfiber towel.

4. For assembly, squeeze the metal ring on the adjusting piece, and push this part into the handle making sure it is secured in place.

5. Put back the head plate by making sure that the line mark on it corresponds with the triangular mark on the base plate.

6. Tighten the adjustment knob fully clockwise. When fully screwed the setting will be at the setting 1 or very near it. Then adjust the setting to your desired number. Your razor is ready to use.

PARKER VARIANT ADJUSTABLE

Finally, let's look at the Parker Variant Adjustable safety razor. This razor is very similar to Merkur Progress, and the whole process is almost the same.

Then take all parts and rinse with clean water and dry with a soft microfiber towel.

4. Insert the adjusting piece into the handle by pushing it and make sure it is secured in place.

5. As with Merkur Progress, you must squeeze the ring in the middle when inserting this piece.

6. Put back the head plate by making sure that the line mark on it corresponds with the line mark on the base plate.

7. Tighten the adjustment knob fully clockwise. Then adjust the setting to your desired number. Your razor is ready to use.

Notes on cleaning: SterimedEndo Ready is a ready to use product, removes lime and oil, gives a shine to plating and disinfects. Just be careful not to use it on aluminum, catalin and bakelite. If you do not have SterimedEndo, you can also use warm water with a small amount of vinegar for cleaning lime residues. However, do not leave your shaving equipment in this mixture for more than 30 minutes. Otherwise vinegar can damage the plating. For fatty soap remains; you can use warm water with dish detergent or shampoo. For stubborn dirts, a soft bristled toothbrush can be used, especially on interior parts. Never use hard dishwashing sponges, sandpaper, hard brushes or similar for cleaning your razors as they can easily scratch the coating.

However, as Razorus, we recommend using SterimedEndo Ready as a single product because it is faster, more practical and more effective. We hope this article will be useful helpful.

May your shaving pleasure ever last
